Raising Awareness Critically
Yesterday as I checked my facebook (not going to lie, it was a little more frequent than usual as I sat dying of boredom in my Tuesday night English class) and I noticed one, two, three, than all of a sudden forty or more friends share the same link- Kony 2012. I was obviously curious since it had been getting heaps of attention, so I decided to check it out. I, presumably along with everyone else, was extremely moved by the film. I think it amazing that so many people are all fired up about the same cause- finally catching a man who has taken thousands of children’s innocence and essentially their childhood. He is a man who deserves the harshest punishment for his actions and should be held fully accountable.
I think the greatest thing about this viral video is the way it has raised attention to an issue that has been going on for years; This is not new, or is it strictly reserved to the country of Uganda. Kids are being taken from their homes and forced into labour or sex slavery in many parts of the developing world. If it takes a video like this to highlight the issue globally than I say go for it, you have my support.
However, it is of great importance that all of us think critically and respond to the video with an open mind and not just pure emotion. Before we all start throwing our money at this organization, stop and read up all of it’s programs and where the money is actually going. Sure it sounds great, but it’s important to do our research rather than get all hyped up over a clearly subjective video.
Don’t get me wrong, I think the video is a great way to raise awareness and to highlight the atrocities that are taking place in what seems like world’s away from our peaceful, stable country where the biggest of our worries are often how we are going to finish all of this week’s assignments or possibly pass tomorrow’s midterm. I just think its everyone’s responsibility to read up on what you are posting and know the details behind it rather than just basing your entire opinion on someone else’s information and beliefs.
I do believe the creators of this video are passionate about what they stand for and this video highlights the power of one’s voice and the power of persistence. Be sure to create your own opinion & own voice in response to it. Just some thoughts…
Here are both the Kony 2012 video & recent blog posts that got me thinking.

I may not be where I want or know where I want to be… but I am going to enjoy where I am.
